A New York Mets fan at a road game was criticized by commentators after his controversial decision.
The Mets fan was in the stands at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois.
He was watching the New York team face the Chicago Cubs in one of the most iconic stadiums in America.
The baseball spectator’s standout moment came in the top of the fifth inning.
New York trailed 6-0 when Francisco Alvarez took responsibility.
He hit a home run into the left field bleachers, where he was caught by the fan.
But after a few moments, the fan threw the home run ball back onto the field.
Steve Gelbs and Ron Darling were announcing the game for SNY on the Mets’ version of the broadcast.
A stunned Gelbs said: “Wow, they made him throw it back.
“You know what, that’s a lot of peer pressure.
“Grow your spine, man.”
And Darling added: “Obviously not a leader.”
Cubs fans in the stands at Wrigley Field follow the tradition of returning home runs from opposing players.
That means fans of the road team face a dilemma if they manage to catch him.
They can throw the ball back and endear themselves to the rest of the stand.
Or they may keep the ball as a precious souvenir but upset the locals.
Fans saw the clip circulate on social media and were also furious with the viewer’s decision.
You know what, that’s a lot of peer pressure.
Have courage, man.Steve Gelbs at SNY
One commented: “Gelbs destroying it. Sensational stuff.”
Another suggested: “Ban him from Citi Field.”
While a third wondered: “He must be an imposter in Mets gear.”
The Mets recently went on a remarkable seven-game winning streak inspired by a new mascot.
Grimace threw out the first pitch at Citi Field earlier this month, which led to an impressive winning streak.
The Mets entered Sunday’s game against the Cubs with a 36-39 record in 2024.
