The Philadelphia Phillies pulled off an extremely rare triple play against the Detroit Tigers on Monday night.
The Phillies cruised to an 8-1 road victory over the Tigers, and Philadelphia superstar Bryce Haper echoed his thoughts on a historic play during the game.
During the third inning, with the Phillies up 4-0, the Tigers had runners on the corners with no outs.
Detroit’s Matt Vierling hit a broken soft liner back to pitcher Aaron Nola, who threw to first baseman Harper to double Kelly at first.
Harper then threw to third after Zach McKinstry raced home after swinging the bat without scoring.
Third baseman Alec Bohm caught the ball and hit the bag to complete the triple play.
This was the first 1-3-5 triple play in MLB since July 11, 1929, according to the Baseball Almanac.
After the game, Harper shared how he and the Phillies felt after pulling off the rare play.
“That was a really cool moment for all of us,” Harper said, via ESPN.
“It was like going back to little league, we were so excited.”
Tigers coach AJ Hinch explained McKinstry’s thought process on the play.
“I don’t know if it was the club breaking, but [McKinstry] I definitely thought the ball hit the ground,” he said.
“He held on until Nola threw first, and then he was running home.
“He simply misinterpreted the play.”
X fans were impressed by the unusual baseball game.
“That was excellent,” commented one.
“My first time seeing this. Cool!” another wrote.
“I honestly don’t understand how people can say baseball is boring!” a third added.
The Phillies have won three straight by a combined score of 24-3.
They have a 52-26 record, the best in MLB.
The Tigers, in turn, have lost seven of their last 10 games.
Detroit has just a 36-42 record and is in fourth place in the AL Central.
