CINCINNATI Reds pitcher Hunter Greene suffered an embarrassing moment on the mound on Tuesday.
While facing the Pittsburgh Pirates, Greene was unable to control himself and vomited on the mound.
Greene threw a fastball at Pirates slugger Bryan Reynolds before dropping lunch directly onto the pitching rubber.
He had just seven shots left in the game when he had the raw moment and the game stopped.
Coaches quickly rushed to support Greene after he vomited just minutes into the game, but he was able to continue pitching after the incident.
Vomiting in the first incident would ultimately foreshadow his start, as Greene allowed six earned runs in just four innings.
Interestingly, Greene also vomited during his match last week, blaming the hot weather.
The temperature was also in the 80s during Tuesday’s opener, so perhaps the recent heat wave isn’t sitting well with the Reds pitcher.
PITCH PERFECT
Greene had a solid season despite the previous two starts.
Aside from the vomiting, the young pitcher has a 3.79 ERA with 103 strikeouts.
He is on pace to pitch his most games in a season and has already matched his career-high five.
Despite Greene’s success, the Reds are struggling to find wins to get into contention for a playoff spot.
The team is currently 37-42 and is 3.5 games out of a playoff spot.
They are also on a huge skid, losing three of their last 10 games.
Meanwhile, other National League teams are on the rise and starting to create some separation in the Wild Card chase.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are just one game under .500 and are 1.5 games out of a playoff spot.
Five Major MLB Rule Changes in 2024
1. The pitch clock is reduced from 20 to 18 seconds with runners on base. It will remain at 15 seconds with the bases empty.
2. When a pitching change is made, the inning clock will reset to 2:00 instead of 2:15 as happened last year.
3. Teams will only be able to visit four mounds per game in 2024, compared to five last season.
4. Defenders and defenders blocking bases will be called for obstruction.
5. The runners’ lane from home plate to first base has been widened to include the dirt between the grass and the white line.
The New York Mets are also just one game under .500 and are the same distance from a playoff spot. They are also 8-2 in their last 10 games.
As it stands, six teams stand between the Reds and a playoff spot, and when the trade deadline arrives, they could be sellers if they maintain their current pace.
Star players like Greene could end up on the move if the Reds don’t get more wins on their calendar.
Greene will take control again on Sunday if there are no complications from the incident.
