WE may have seen the fan capture of the season in MLB.
An Orioles fan had everyone at Baltimore’s Camden Yards cheering when he caught a ball with his bare hands despite having a bottle of liquor and a phone in his other hand.
Josh Naylor of the Cleveland Guardians threw a foul ball 415 feet with an exit velocity of 108.5 mph.
And at the top of the stands a fan named Tim Byer stood in the corner of the upper deck.
When Byer made the catch, the floor exploded in surprise and delight.
And Byer, who doesn’t seem like the shy type, celebrated by taking off his cap and opening his arms to receive the praise.
The announcers were incredulous at such an audacious moment.
“What!” said the commentator. “He just did it with his bare hands! That’s crazy.”
And fans of X, the site formerly known as Twitter, were also quick to praise.
“Give that man a contract! Impressive!” one fan said.
“And he doesn’t have people around him pestering him to donate it,” said another fan.
“That’s like an insane fall from that railing, isn’t it?” a third fan said.
“How does he do this? Catch of the year,” said a fourth fan.
Byer later appeared on a MASN broadcast with Rob Long.
“Does this come with a contract?” he joked.
He also named announcer Rex Barney, famous for saying “give that fan a contract!” after impressive catches from the stands during MLB games.
“I have a season ticket and my seats are downstairs, but we came here to spread out a little,” Byer added.
Five Major MLB Rule Changes in 2024
1. The pitch clock is reduced from 20 to 18 seconds with runners on base. It will remain at 15 seconds with the bases empty.
2. When a pitching change is made, the inning clock will reset to 2:00 instead of 2:15 as happened last year.
3. Teams will only be able to visit four mounds per game in 2024, compared to five last season.
4. Defenders and defenders blocking bases will be called for obstruction.
5. The runners’ lane from home plate to first base has been widened to include the dirt between the grass and the white line.
“So it would have been a home run if I was there.”
Byer revealed that he was a high school baseball outfielder 25 years ago.
He won a state championship in 1997 at Chesapeake High School.
The Orioles lost the game 10-8 to the Guardians, leaving them at 48-30 this season.
There will be another meeting between the teams on Thursday.
