NEW York Mets legend Keith Hernandez may have damaged his relationship with fans.

The 70-year-old former first baseman had his number 17 jersey retired by the franchise in 2022.

He won a World Series with New York in 1986 and is a longtime announcer for Mets games.

But Hernandez could have crossed the line by taking aim at the popular Grimace good luck charm.

Since the purple McDonald’s character threw out the first pitch a few weeks ago, the Mets have been on a hot streak.

Hernandez let his intrusive thoughts get the better of him during yesterday’s loss to the Houston Astros.

The cameras I found an inflatable grimace in the stands during the seventh inning.

“It’s the inflatable grimace,” Mets voice Gary Cohen said.

“Oh yes?” asked Hernandez. “Wouldn’t you love to take an ice pick and pop it, Gare?”

“No. I’m not a grimace popper, are you a grimace popper?” Cohen asked.

“I would love to do that,” Hernandez responded.

Fans were not happy with Hernandez’s evil scheme.

“Keith wants to break the Mets good luck charm,” one fan posted on X.

“Keith talking about popping Grimace today and skinning him yesterday, what Keith is using,” added another.

A third posted: “Careta Odio?!?! Wow!!!”

Hernandez made his MLB debut as a first baseman in 1974 and retired in 1990.

A five-time All-Star, he won the 1979 NL MVP award and two World Series titles.

Five Major MLB Rule Changes in 2024

1. The pitch clock is reduced from 20 to 18 seconds with runners on base. It will remain at 15 seconds with the bases empty.

2. When a pitching change is made, the inning clock will reset to 2:00 instead of 2:15 as it did last year.

3. Teams will only be able to visit four mounds per game in 2024, compared to five last season.

4. Defenders and defenders blocking bases will be called for obstruction.

5. The runners’ lane from home plate to first base has been widened to include the dirt between the grass and the white line.

Last month, MLB announcer Michael Kay stirred up the rivalry between the Yankees and Mets during the New York Subway Series.

The Yankees’ broadcaster declared its YES Network team the “best stand in baseball.”

SNY ran an ad on ESPN radio in New York during The Michael Kay Show enthusing his team of Cohen, Hernandez and Ron Darling.

“What I’m going to say now might get me into some trouble,” Kay told her co-hosts Don La Greca and Peter Rosenberg.

“O [SNY] the ad, running during the last intermission, said ‘Enjoy the Subway Series with the best booth in baseball’.

“I mean, do you expect me to just accept this without doing anything?

“I think our booth is the best in baseball.”
