MLB rookie pitcher Mason Miller suffered an unusual injury — and fans were shocked.
The 25-year-old Oakland Athletics star reliever was placed on the 15-day injured list with a fractured left pinky finger on Thursday.
The A’s website revealed that Miller’s finger injury occurred on Monday.
As for why, the team shared that the 25-year-old flameout pitcher “awkwardly” placed his hand on a trainer’s desk as he prepared to do a drill following Monday’s win against the Houston Astros.
During the game, Miller was electric, throwing just 11 pitches and retired all three batters.
His fastball averaged 101.4 miles per hour in the outing.
MLB fans were left speechless over Miller’s peculiar X injury.
“I hate this for the guy,” one commented.
“This is brutal. Get well soon, Mason,” wrote a second.
“Mason Miller did what?” a third asked.
Miller has been sensational this season, posting a 2.21 ERA and striking out 70 batters in 40 2/3 innings.
He is 15-of-17 in save opportunities.
Miller’s lack of saves is largely due to the fact that Oakland has a disappointing 41-63 record.
He made the All-Star team in his rookie campaign and threw a pitch of 103.6 mph in the record-breaking game.
Miller, 25, has been a trade deadline candidate before the July 30 deadline.
However, the A’s reportedly asked for a big return.
Miller still has five years before he hits free agency.
It doesn’t seem likely that he will be traded, but it won’t be because of the injury to the little finger on his non-throwing hand.
Miller’s injury will not end the season.
But throwing an injury into the mix makes it difficult for Oakland to receive top dollar for the rookie.
