The WNBA star has since repaired her relationship with her parents, who were the first to recognize her talent on the court.

She has posted several heartfelt tributes to her mother and father on social media over the years.

Growing up with parents Sandra Griner, a homemaker, and Raymond Griner, a sheriff and Vietnam veteran, life wasn’t all roses.

The famous athlete struggled with her sexuality and was called a “freak” at school “just for being different” as she was much taller than her elementary and middle school classmates.

She said Aljazeera America in 2014: “I hit rock bottom at a certain point.”

A self-described “daddy’s girl,” Griner came out to her mother during her junior year of high school but hid her sexual identity from her father until her senior year.

Although Cherelle met Brittney while studying at Baylor University in Texas, the couple only dated years later, after Brittney split from her now ex-wife, Glory Johnson, in 2016.

Brittney proposed to Cherelle in 2018.

They got married a year later and in a 2020 Instagram PostBrittney reflected on the first time they met, sharing her love for her wife.

“I’ll never forget the day I met you at Baylor, in the subfield!” Brittney wrote.

“You tapped me on the shoulder and said I got your milkshake (still up for debate haha) and was immediately struck by its beauty!

“You had no idea, but I knew you were the one for me, baby. You stood by me through thick and thin!”
