SHAQUILLE O’NEAL revealed what it was like playing against Michael Jordan as a rookie.
On Shaq’s podcast, The Big Pod With Shaq, JJ Redick asked him what it was like to be on the same court as Michael Jordan.
“This is for my own curiosity,” Redick said.
“MJ’s aura at that time, his rookie year. He’s coming off two championships.
“What’s it like being on the floor with him, man?”
Shaq could only describe the interaction as if he met God while playing basketball.
“I don’t know what God looks like. It’s like seeing God,” Shaq said.
“Because the things he did on TV, and then you see it in real life, it’s like, ‘Oh my God, this is really real.’”
Shaq explained that even with his best effort he couldn’t stop Jordan from scoring on him.
“One of the first plays of the game, and in my head I was like, ‘I’m not going to dunk,’” Shaq said.
“So I tried to find him earlier, the son of a bitch passed me, I bumped into him and he still did that shit and gave up. [backboard] and the crowd went crazy.
‘I was like ‘F***, this guy is real.’
Fans shared opinions about Shaq’s thoughts on Jordan and shared them on social media.
“Bron stans hate these stories,” said one fan.
“This is the softest era in NBA history, MJ was winning pure aura all by himself lmao,” said another fan.
“Nobody talks about Lebron like that,” said a third fan.
“Top 10 players to ever talk about Mike like this, but people say he’s the goat,” said a fourth fan.
I don’t know what God is like. It’s like seeing God.
Shaq on Michael Jordan
Jordan and Shaq were in the league together for seven years, while LeBron James was in the league at the same time as Shaq for eight years.
Shaq also praised LeBron, even calling him the best of all time.
“He has four rings and becomes the leading scorer in NBA history,” Shaq said in 2021.
“He’s the best of them all, there’s nothing you can say.”
