Former NBA Draft pick Royce White scored a huge victory in his political career.

After spending the latter stages of his basketball career writing messages like “Trump won” and “Protect RFK Jr.” in his head during games, White is now in the running to become a U.S. senator.

White was selected in the first round of the 2012 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets from the state of Iowa.

However, he only played three games in his NBA career, all for the Sacramento Kings in the 2013-14 season, as mental health issues affected his career.

Now, outside of basketball, White has built a political career and won the Republican Party’s endorsement to face Democrat Amy Klobuchar for the Minnesota Senate seat.

“Thank you MNGOP and delegates for supporting me as a candidate [sic] in the 2024 Minnesota U.S. Senate race,” White tweeted following the endorsement.

“I’m speechless and it takes a lot.”

There is no guarantee that White will be the candidate for the Republican position, as primary voting has yet to take place on August 13.

There are about a half-dozen candidates for the position, including former naval intelligence officer Joe Fraser.

Fraser was previously considered the front-runner for the Republican Party endorsement, according to the Star Tribune.

White obtaining the Republican Party’s endorsement is a huge victory for his political career, which began in 2022.

The 33-year-old originally ran in the Republican primary for the Senate seat in Minnesota, but was unable to run.

With a better chance of winning the candidacy this year, White made his political views clear in an acceptance speech over the weekend.

He campaigned against money in politics and responded to critics of his campaign finances.

“The reality is that we need people who cannot be bought now more than ever,” White stressed during his speech.

“They don’t have a price, and I can’t emphasize that enough.”

White’s campaign had just over $10,000 available according to its most recent report Federal Election Commission Filing.

He is also campaigning a 180 towards the Black Lives Matter movement. After previously calling for police reform following the murder of George Floyd, White now denies all reports of his involvement.

“I never marched with BLM, they marched with me… all the way to the Federal Reserve,” he wrote on X.

“Once the top brass at BLM running the mainstream media discovered that I wasn’t there to break the same story and was smart enough to talk about a much deeper financial problem, they quickly decided that this Black [sic] man’s life DOESN’T MATTER that much.”

White is a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump and supported some of his campaigns around his support.

“Donald Trump could walk on stage, drop his pants, walk up to the podium, and I would still never vote for you damn Democrats again,” he said earlier.

If White wins the GOP bid for the Minnesota Senate seat, he will have a tough fight against Klobuchar.

She won her last election in a dominant fashion, 60.31% against 36.21%.
