SHANNON Sharpe wanted a First Take colleague to apologize to him on Tuesday’s edition of the ESPN show.
Sharpe’s words prompted First Take presenter Molly Qerim to intervene in the conversation.
On Tuesday, First Take showed an April clip of NBA insider Brian Windhorst defending the Oklahoma City Thunder after Sharpe called the team “the weakest number one team in NBA history.”
In the clip, Windhorst told Sharpe, “You’re going to regret those words.”
The Thunder, who won 57 games in the regular season, would end up losing in the second round to the Dallas Mavericks in six games.
The cast of Sharpe, Windhorst, Qerim, analyst Andraya Carter and former NBA player Austin Rivers from First Take returned to the screen.
While in Los Angeles, Sharpe grabbed a bottle of disinfectant spray and told Windhorst, “I got disinfectant for that outlet you had.
“Do you want to apologize now or later?”
Windhorst, who was also in a remote location, was unapologetic and instead gave credit to Luka Doncic and the Mavericks by saying he would continue to buy Thunder stock.
The NBA insider then cited Sharpe’s previous opinion of thinking the Los Angeles Lakers — the NFL icon’s favorite team — would have knocked out the Thunder in the playoffs.
Sharpe doubled down on his original take on a hypothetical playoff matchup between the Thunder and Lakers, who were defeated by the Nuggets in the first round.
After Windhorst disagreed, Sharpe did not let Windhorst off without apologizing for his previous opinion of the Thunder.
‘You have to be better than this,’ riled ESPN viewers as Shannon Sharpe called for Lakers commentary live on First Take
“All he has to say, ‘Shannon, you [were] right,” said Sharpe.
“Why is it so hard for you to say this?
After a few seconds of Windhorst being speechless, Qerim, who appeared live from New York’s First Take studios, decided to join the debate.
“I’ll tell you why: because everyone on TV has a bit of an ego, right?” Qerim said.
“And that’s exactly it.
“Everyone at this table, everyone on my screen.
“I’d like to think mine is pretty small compared to other people, but everyone has a little bit of an ego.”
First look at the numbers
First Take has grown from strength to strength under the guidance of Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim over the past year.
ESPN’s weekday debate show averaged 496,000 viewers in 2023 — making it the most-watched year in the show’s history.
Its December average of 611,000 represented a 24% annual increase compared to 2022.
The show has also recorded more than 250 million views on YouTube.
First Take was helped by the addition of Shannon Sharpe alongside Smith and Qerim after he left Fox Sports’ Undisputed.
The First Take segment was moved to another segment after the back and forth between Sharpe and Windhorst.
The sports debate show airs every weekday from 10 a.m. ET to noon.
