Redick, 39, was named as the top candidate for the job, alongside Boston Celtics assistant Sam Cassell and former Charlotte Hornets coach James Borrego.

And Stein reported Sunday that the Lakers could end up hiring all three, with the Duke icon becoming head coach and Cassell and Borrego joining his staff.

The NBA insider added that Jared Dudley, who won the 2020 NBA championship with Los Angeles, would also be considered for one of the assistant positions.

“More smoke to support the idea that ESPN’s JJ Redick is in fact the leading candidate to land the Lakers head coaching job,” the NBA insider wrote on Twitter. your substack.

“Rumors about potential personnel targets for Redick have already begun to circulate.

“League sources say other Lakers are looking for Sam Cassell candidates [Boston] and James Borrego [New Orleans] would be the main targets of Redick’s team.

“As well as an expected attempt to bring Mavericks assistant coach Jared Dudley back to Lakerland.

“As a Lakers player in the final two seasons of his career in 2019-20 and 2020-21, Dudley had strong relationships with LeBron James and Anthony Davis.”

After retiring from the NBA, Dudley became an assistant on Jason Kidd’s coaching staff with the Dallas Mavericks in 2021.

Meanwhile, although he is known for having a high basketball IQ, Redick has no coaching experience.

Still, he has continually been mentioned as a serious candidate for the Lakers job, sparking speculation that LeBron James, 39, had been pushing for his podcast partner to take over the team.

James launched the Mind the Game podcast alongside the former LA Clippers and Orlando Magic point guard earlier this year.

But NBA insider Shams Charania recently reported that LeBron wants nothing to do with the Los Angeles coaching search.

“I’m told LeBron James is not involved in the Lakers head coaching search,” Charania said.

“JJ Redick, James Borrego and Sam Cassell are the main early targets.

“But LeBron James has made it clear that this is the organization’s decision.

He hasn’t had any conversations with the Lakers about JJ Redick, his podcast partner.

“He also hasn’t talked to JJ about that position.”

James’ agent, Rich Paul, confirmed the report in an interview with Bleacher ReportIt’s Chris Haynes.

“LeBron is not involved. That’s true,” Paul said.

“I think it’s hard for people not to want a narrative in itself. There are a lot of false narratives out there.”

The head of Klutch Sports added: “But as far as the coaching search, that’s the Lakers’ decision.

“I would always advise LeBron or anyone else not to position yourself in a way that has such a strong hand in a decision that it could come back to hurt you in the future.”
