The NBA will face an unprecedented eight-day pause if the Dallas Mavericks beat the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Dallas leads the Western Conference Finals 3-0 after a comprehensive 116-107 victory over the T-Wolves on Sunday.
Luka Doncic and company can clinch a spot in the NBA Finals with a win in Game 4 tonight.
The Boston Celtics have already defeated the Indiana Pacers in a one-sided series in the East.
With both conference finals potentially headed to 4-0, the NBA was left with a scheduling dilemma.
Game 1 of the NBA Finals will be held on Thursday, June 6th.
The NBA has set June 6 as the start date for the series and that will not change.
As such, broadcasters will potentially have to fill 7 nights of programming without live action.
If the Mavericks win on Tuesday, both teams will have more than a week to prepare for the game.
It is the longest gap since 2014-15, when the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers waited 7 days to start the finals series, for Stool.
“If the Mavs win today, we will have 8 days without the NBA. Please don’t get swept @Timberwolves,” one fan pleaded on X.
“They should adjust the calendar. There is no need for the first game to be set in stone,” complained another.
“In the meantime, the NHL has two different options depending on how long the conference finals are,” said a third.
“I actually like both teams to get a little rest, which makes the match better,” countered a fourth.
The delay could be a blessing for the Celtics, who beat the Pacers despite missing injured center Kristaps Porzingis.
He continues to battle a calf strain and sat out all four games against Indiana.
Porzingis joined the Celtics from the Washington Wizards last year.
