With just 2:31 left on the game clock, Reese was called for her fifth foul of the night at Wintrust Arena.

She appeared to look in the officer’s direction before waving at him as she walked away.

The referee immediately turned to Reese, ejecting her from the game for a double technical.

A seemingly surprised Reese opened her arms in response.

It remains unclear whether or not there was more involved in the call than what can be seen on TV.

Footage of Reese’s ejection quickly reached X, formerly known as Twitter, where many WNBA fans dismissed the call.

“Rigged,” one viewer commented.

“The WNBA coaches are so idiotic that the NBA wouldn’t allow any team to complete a game if they did that,” said a second.

“Unless she actually said something crazy, it didn’t seem like it warranted an expulsion.”

Another simply responded: “That’s an incredibly smooth decision.”

While a fourth added: “Such a weak ejection.”

Speaking to reporters after the game, Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon explained that she still did not know what led to Reese’s ejection.

“I tried to get an explanation, but I couldn’t,” she said.

“I still don’t know what happened.”

This came just one day after Reese criticized the narrative that the league’s growth was largely due to Indiana Fever star and top draft pick Caitlin Clark.

“I know I’m going to go down in history,” she said.

How the WNBA works

The 2024 WNBA season features 12 teams, with the regular season running from May 14 to September 9.

Each team plays 40 regular season games – four against five teams from the same conference and two teams from the other conference, and three games against the remaining four teams.

The top eight teams in the league standings qualify for the playoffs – regardless of which conference they are in.

The playoffs will use a best-of-three format in the first round, while the WNBA semifinals and finals will be best-of-five.

This season also includes a month-long break for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The Las Vegas Aces are defending back-to-back WNBA champions.

“I’ll look back 20 years from now and think, ‘Yes, the reason we’re watching women’s basketball isn’t just because of one person, it’s because of me too.’

“And I want you to realize that.”

Reese added: “There are so many great players in this league who have deserved this for a long, long time, and thankfully it’s coming now.”

Reese finished the game with 13 points, 10 rebounds and an assist in 24 minutes.

Chennedy Carter, who went viral after the previous loss to the Fever after pushing Clark onto the court, led the team with 16 points, three rebounds and two assists.

Five-time All-Star Breanna Stewart had a game-high 33 points, 14 rebounds and three assists for the 8-2 Liberty.

The loss leaves Chicago in fourth place in the Eastern Conference at 3-5, ahead of the Fever at 2-9 and the Washington Mystics at 0-9.

The Sky will return to action on Thursday when they face Washington before returning home to host the 4-3 Atlanta Dream on Saturday.
