Barkley was at Amerant Bank Arena for Game 2 of the Edmonton Oilers series with the Florida Panthers.

The 61-year-old joined the ESPN on ABC broadcast during the first intermission.

Later in the game, he was interviewed by Sportsnet in the crowd during the second intermission.

Barkley was asked about the Oilers’ chances of winning – but apparently forgot he was on live TV.

“Well, they played really well in Game 1, but they didn’t win,” Barkley said.

“[Panthers goalie Sergei] Bobrovsky was incredible.”

Barkley, confused, immediately apologized for the slip-up and continued with his opinion anyway.

“Oops, sorry. I’m so sorry. He was amazing. I apologize to all of you kids at home,” he continued.

“He was incredible. But you know, the Oilers guy, they’ve been incredible. I picked them early in the playoffs.

“But the Panthers have been amazing, so I’m looking forward to the third period.”

The NBA’s days may be numbered on TNT

“It’s Charles Barkley, I wouldn’t expect anything less,” laughed one X fan in response to the filming.

“Brilliant recovery,” added another, impressed with Barkley smoothing out the segment.

“Chuck is a national treasure,” commented a third.

On the ice, the Panthers took control of the contest in the third period.

Evan Rodrigues scored two goals as Florida won 4-1, extending the series lead to 2-0.

Inside the future of the NBA?

The operation of the NBA on TNT Sports is in great doubt due to the NBA’s broadcast agreements.

The Emmy-winning sports show is a fan favorite thanks to the likes of Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley.

But TNT’s broadcast deal with the NBA ends after next season and NBC appears poised to take over those rights in a $2.6 billion deal.

If TNT loses its NBA package, it will raise serious questions about the popular Inside the NBA.

One solution could be to recreate the show on another network, which would snatch the rights from the NBA.

Barkley’s future on our TV screens is currently uncertain, with Inside the NBA set to end after the 2024-25 season.

He recently spoke about the uncertainty surrounding the show, with TNT likely to lose the NBA rights.

“That’s the only thing that really bothered me about the TNT experience,” he told Mad Dog Sports Radio’s Beadle & Decker. “Like, hey man, just tell us something.

“Everyone publishes an article every day about ‘We still have a chance’ or ‘We lost’.

“You see us every week, how about you pick up the phone and say ‘Hey, we’re still negotiating’ or ‘You know what, we’ve lost control.’

“Just the truth. Because the only thing that really sucks is that we have to do this next year no matter what.”
