BRITTNEY Griner has announced she is expecting a child with her wife Cherelle.
The couple posted a surprise announcement on Instagram, stating that their baby is three months away.
Griner and Cherelle married in 2019 after Griner’s first marriage ended in 2016.
Her upcoming child birth will be Griner’s third child, after she had two in her previous marriage.
She had twins with her ex-wife Glory Johnson, also a WNBA player, in 2015, but they divorced just a year later.
Griner and Johnson pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct charges due to domestic violence issues during their marriage.
Griner was forced to take 26 weeks of domestic violence classes and also pay child support following the divorce.
Fans shared their excitement about the couple’s pregnancy and congratulated them in the comments of the Instagram post.
“Oh no??!! Congratulations!!” one fan said.
“Yassssssssssss and congratulations,” said another fan.
“This is beautiful news! Congratulations to everyone!!” a third fan said.
“OMG YES!! The best news. Congratulations!” a fourth fan said.
The exciting news comes shortly after Griner signed a new contract to remain with the Phoenix Mercury.
Griner is entering her 11th season in the WNBA, all of which was spent with the Mercury.
She is an eight-time All Star and two-time Defensive Player of the Year, on her way to a likely induction into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
Griner spent time in prison in Russia after being accused of smuggling drugs into the country.
She carried vape cartridges containing less than a gram of hash oil, but was held captive from February to December 2022.
Griner triumphantly returned to the WNBA in 2023, earning an All Star selection after averaging 17.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
