WBNA superstar Angel Reese was left covering her mouth in disbelief while a reporter was having a private conversation during a press conference.
In what can only be described as an extremely awkward moment, Chicago Sky star Reese was initially confused by the strange crossover of voices.
It all happened while a reporter was asking a serious basketball question, about Reese breaking Candace Parker’s double-double streak record.
It was then that it became clear that another microphone had been left on by mistake.
“[Are we] Will you ever have an intimate relationship?” came a surprise intervention from a female voice.
“Wow, this is an uncomfortable topic,” came the response from a male voice.
It was already clear that all normal press conference etiquette was being thrown out the window.
Reese looked completely confused by this unlikely turn of events.
“Excuse me,” she said, as the team asked the first reporter to repeat the question.
“I’ve never been interested in being intimate with anyone,” the man said.
At this stage it was very embarrassing for everyone involved.
Reese covered her mouth in shock, while coach Teresa Weatherspoon and teammate Marina Mabrey also seemed unsure of where this was all going.
“I told you they were finding it strange,” Mabrey said, laughing.
“Oooo, they’re going to get fired,” said Reese.
Fortunately, all microphones were muted, with the team no doubt shocked by this turn of events.
The press conference finally resumed normally.
How the WNBA works
The 2024 WNBA season features 12 teams, with the regular season running from May 14 to September 9.
Each team plays 40 regular season games – four against five teams from the same conference and two teams from the other conference, and three games against the remaining four teams.
The top eight teams in the league standings qualify for the playoffs – regardless of which conference they are in.
The playoffs will use a best-of-three format in the first round, while the WNBA semifinals and finals will be best-of-five.
This season also includes a month-long break for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The Las Vegas Aces are defending back-to-back WNBA champions.
Reese was certainly in good form in the Sky’s game against the Seattle Storm.
Reese recorded his 13th consecutive double-double, a league record.
She had 17 points and 14 rebounds in the game, once again showing her quality.
However, Sky were defeated, losing 84-71, and are now 8-12 on the season.
Reese’s brilliant performances, along with fellow superstar Caitlin Clark, caused interest in the WNBA to increase dramatically.
Large crowds and record television viewing figures are key features of this season in women’s basketball.
