NBA fans weren’t afraid to criticize Joel Embiid for his brutal low points in an Olympic exhibition game on Saturday.
Embiid’s gaffes came as a team USA almost suffered one of the biggest defeats of all time to South Sudan in the Olympics game at London’s 02 Arena.
South Sudan went up by 14 in the first half as they held Team USA to 1 of 11 three-pointers while creating nine first-half turnovers.
Two of the turnovers came from starter Embiid, who double-teamed in both cases.
One of the turnovers saw the Philadelphia 76ers star pass the ball behind his back, out of bounds, to no Team USA players nearby.
In the third quarter, Embiid also missed an open layup after receiving a pass from LeBron James, but he grabbed the offensive rebound and made the second attempt.
Still, fans shared their disapproval of the 30-year-old, saying he shouldn’t be a starter for Team USA going forward.
“Attending Joel Embiid out there with anyone else just reminds me how slow he and his game are,” one wrote.
“Team USA is bringing all comers NBA Twitter together united around one idea: Joel Embiid cannot be a starter on this team”, commented another.
“Joel Embiid is killing America,” added a third.
While Embiid certainly had weaknesses in the game, the 2022-23 MVP was still productive for the team.
He finished the game with 14 points (5-6 FG), seven rebounds and three assists and was a plus-16.
Despite a slow start to the game, Team USA beat South Sudan 101-100.
LeBron led the team with 23 points, six rebounds and six assists.
The Los Angeles Lakers superstar also scored the winning layup with eight seconds left in the contest.
The US victory comes after a victory over Canada in Las Vegas and conquers Australia It is Serbia in Abu Dhabi.
The U.S. will continue to prepare for its opportunity to win a fifth consecutive gold medal before the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The USA will play the second of two friendly games at the O2 Arena in London, while facing Germany on Monday.
They will then go to Paris to compete in the Olympics.
The USA will play three Group C games in Lille: on July 28 (Serbia), July 31 (South Sudan) and August 3 (Puerto Rico).
