“IF it looks like a duck, it swims like a duck and quacks like a duck. . . so take the duck out of the Olympic Games” seems to be a message from Paris 2024.

Many, then, think that boxers Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting will reach podium glory next week.

But it is deeply sad that a global event with so many stories — of triumph, of adversity, of heartbreak and of absolute hard work against all odds — focuses on the backstories of these two individuals.

Everyone has their opinion. And everyone is entitled to their opinion.

But those who speak the loudest, people like JK Rowling – who really should go back to Privet Drive and put aside some of the militant anti-trans stuff – need to be careful.

When the author labeled the athletes “men,” she knew what she was doing: stirring up her cauldron of hate and ending the misinformed masses.

It was deeply irresponsible.

Because in Algeria, where Khelif is from, it is illegal to be gay, much less trans, which, let’s face it, is what the boxer is accused of being.

In fact, she became the world’s first fictional Trans-Olympian.

But she is not transgender. And it never was.

Because, as happens so often these days, misinformation, conspiracy, and gross exaggeration abound.

And how tragically horrible it would be if those vociferous individuals who claim to defend women saw two women later killed by hateful mobs.

Where was JK’s outrage that convicted Dutch rapist Steven van de Velde was allowed to compete in beach volleyball?

Or where, if she is so concerned about advantageous hormones, was her anger at the gold medal-winning Chinese 4x100m medley team, which featured two swimmers who previously returned positive doping test results?

Yesterday, the Algerian athlete attacked the scrutiny of her gender as “harmful to human dignity”, imploring people to “refrain from bullying”.

And then the International Boxing Association, the body that originally claimed the pair had failed the “eligibility tests”, without even explaining categorically what those tests are, openly intimidated her.

The IBA, which was banned from regulating Olympic boxing due to governance problems, lack of financial transparency and many cases of corruption, let its clearly crazy Russian boss, Umar Kremlev, do the talking.

Kremlev spoke sensitively: “The tests show that they were men. We don’t check what they have between their legs. We don’t know if they were born that way or if some changes were made.”

Very unhelpfully, the boxers themselves and their governing bodies also refuse to say exactly which tests they underwent. And in this, some blame lies with them.

Does the couple have conditions like Swyer Syndrome, which means they have female reproductive organs but higher testosterone levels? Are they intersex? How high is their testosterone?

Of course, they shouldn’t have to drop their shorts and show the world their genitals.

But they must show more transparency.

The IOC’s clumsy handling of testing procedures also needs to be addressed.

And if these women really do have a grossly unfair advantage, then this must be addressed – and yes, perhaps they should compete against men, albeit in a lighter weight class.

After all, the hurt feelings of these athletes should not trump the common sense and well-being of their XX chromosome counterparts.

Safety must come first, for everyone.

And that means no more rumors, no more conspiracy theories, and no more wild conjecture. Just facts.
