THE BOXING ring has announced that Lieutenant Dan Hennessey has retired after accidentally announcing the wrong winner in a horror blunder.
The bizarre moment happened over the weekend in the WBA bantamweight title fight between Cherneka Johnson and Nina Hughes in New Zealand.
The two fighters put on an outstanding show as they fought for 10 rounds.
And after a fierce dispute, the result went to the judges’ scorecards.
Challenger Johnson was the winner by split decision.
But instead of announcing her as the new champion, Hennessey mistakenly told the crowd that Hughes had retained her title.
The English fighter celebrated wildly in the ring after the wrong call.
And Hennessey was forced to back down before revealing that Johnson was in fact the real winner.
But after backlash from Hughes and some fans, Hennessey announced his retirement.
He stated: “I love all the support from everyone. Thank you everyone for the kind words.

“Unfortunately, the worldwide reaction is absolutely incredible and is affecting my mental health to the point that I will have one more show.
“I’m doing this show because I’m still a man of my word and I promised Sam Rapira I would do this because he’s a great guy and I refuse to keep him waiting.
“I love and will keep in touch with all my friends from all over the world. Thanks. He is no longer the world’s punching bag. I am out.”
On Sunday, Hennessey issued a sincere apology for his mistake.
He said, “I own it. It’s all on me. I take full responsibility for the controversy between Chernika Johnson and Nina Houghs.
“Not the judges, not the sanctioning body. My. I apologized to everyone involved and now I apologize to you. I’m sorry for what happened.
“Once again I am the owner and I can only try to do better next time. It wasn’t my best day at the office. I think all the bad comments on social media I’ve been coming.
“Once again I am devastated and sorry for my horrible performance. You all deserved better. Sorry again.”
