Catterall, 30, from Chorley, was deprived of undisputed glory that night and the two years that passed had cost Taylor all his belts, so only bragging rights were at stake.

But the judges finally got the score right, with cards of: 117-111, 117-11 and 116-113.

Catterall started with a precise one-two and lots of left-handed jabs, the Tartan Tornado aimed for the enemy’s body but missed the opener.

There was a horrible clash of heads in the second, when the two left-handers crossed each other and hit heads, but fortunately no cuts were opened.

Then El Gato Catterall hit a left hand peach and Taylor missed another verse.

Taylor won the third with a spiteful left hand that touched Catterall for the first time in their two meetings.

The fourth round was close, but a quick combination from Catterall right at the end would have caught the judges’ attention.

Catterall’s right jab was excellent in the fifth, hitting Taylor’s defenseless face from all angles and Taylor was sent into the ropes by another excellent volley straight at the bell.

Taylor was also coached during the sixth, his corner having no response to the clinic Catterall was putting on for the Leeds fans.

Taylor was finally tenacious in the seventh round, scoring with three big left hands to the head and a right hook to the body of Catterall to win him the round.

The eighth round was excellent, both men punished and landed decisive shots. Catterall looked tiring, but was still able to counterattack. Taylor was always picking up the pace, but he still got caught.

Nine was also magnificent, but Catterall’s last volley right at the bell should have been enough for him and the facial damage was much more visible on Taylor.

Catterall clinched the 11th round by robbing Taylor of his senses with a vicious left hand. Taylor could have been stopped, but the pair fell to the ground and he was given a much-needed chance to recover.

Braveheart Taylor picked up the pace during the final round but was tagged by his foe until the final bell.

There was no hug at the end and Catterall was furious when Taylor celebrated early and his hopeful team launched him into the sky.

After the competition, Catterall said: “It’s bittersweet because there are no world titles, but now I can close the Josh Taylor chapter.

“I won the fight, this time I took more risks and in the second half, in the rounds where I was reserved, I was still in control.
