And Harris revealed that AJ – an ambassador for the fund – has been in touch to collaborate with the charity to build a care home for former boxers.

The news saw fans hail Joshua – worth £175million – for his touching gesture.

One said: “I have great admiration for Anthony Joshua the boxer but AJ the person is amazing, heart of gold and I hope more people follow his example.”

Another added: “Class from AJ.”

Women’s boxing pioneer Jane Couch posted: “Brilliant news for this much needed cause.”

One posted: “The most amazing news and I really hope something can be resolved.”

Joshua first revealed his intention on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Records.

He said: “They suffer alone, which is why we have been talking about opening a care home.

“That would be part of my legacy in boxing – that I would give something back to the sport that raised me.”

He added: “The only thing I hope is to keep my health intact.

“Because your health is the most important thing you are putting at risk.

“We can notice this in fighters when their health is deteriorating, but we never talk about it among ourselves. Our focus is to win.”

Joshua has shown his kind side before, making a donation to England Boxing during the coronavirus pandemic to help amateur boxing.

He also sent essential items to Nigeria during the lockdown.

Joshua, 34, is expected to return to the ring in September, with British rival Daniel Dubois, 26, the favorite to face him.
