In his attempt to get back to winning ways, Edwards faced Mexican Curiel in Phoenix, Arizona.

The former flyweight champion outclassed his opponent in eight rounds before the fight was stopped on a doctor’s recommendation.

Despite his dominance, he did not emerge from the competition unscathed.

Edwards was left seriously bloodied after an inadvertent clash of heads with Curiel.

The incident left him with a nasty cut above his eye.

After winning by technical decision, Edwards was booed by the crowd.

Responding after taking the microphone, he said: “I don’t know if the crowd realized what happened there.

“The doctor stopped the cut without my decision, I’m more upset than any of the 10,000 fans here.

“I thought I was ahead and I thought my opponent was slowing down.

“I thought I was going to get him out of there or win absolutely conclusively.

“I managed to leave Arizona uglier than when I arrived twice in a row, so I want to apologize to the fans who took it personally, but I had nothing to do with the referee stopping it.

“Maybe I’ll come back and fight Curiel again, I don’t know what the fans want.”
