Indiana announced its non-conference roster on Tuesday. In addition to the multi-team exempt Battle 4 Atlantis tournament on November 27-29? All other enemies outside the conference will go to the Simon Skojodt Assembly Hall.
“My team and I have crafted a non-conference schedule that will lead to long-term success this season,” Indiana coach Mike Woodson said in the official release of the schedule.
Indiana opens its slate with two Ohio Valley Conference foes in SIU-Edwardsville (Nov. 6) and Eastern Illinois (Nov. 10). EIU’s visit brings former Hoosier and EIU coach Marty Simmons back to Bloomington.
The only power conference foe the Hoosiers will face is South Carolina. The Gamecocks invade Assembly Hall on December 16. After that, the Hoosiers host UNC-Greensboro on December 21.
Six days later, IU will be in the Bahamas for Battle 4 Atlantis. The bracket has not yet been announced, but Arizona, Davidson, Gonzaga, Louisville, Oklahoma, Providence and West Virginia make up the remainder of the field.
“We are looking forward to playing one of the best tournaments of the season in our game, Battle 4 Atlantis. The matchups, no matter what they look like, will be a huge test for our team,” Woodson said.
In December, non-conference home games include Sam Houston State (Dec. 3), Miami of Ohio (Dec. 6), Chattanooga (Dec. 21) and Winthrop (Dec. 28). There will likely also be a home and road Big Ten game mixed in.
Game times will be announced later.
“We will be tested by some well-coached, veteran clubs early in the season, which will prepare us for a 20-game conference schedule,” Woodson said.
Fans can debate this. According to barttorvik.com and Bart Torvik’s preseason projections, only one of Indiana’s opponents — South Carolina — is expected to be among the top 100 Division I teams.
Battle 4 Atlantis field offers better opportunities. Gonzaga (9) and Arizona (10) are the teams with the highest projection. Indiana (31) ranks third. Providence (60), Louisville (62), Oklahoma (67) and West Virginia (83) would represent quality wins.
The projections are just that and may not hold up as the season goes on, but it’s clear that Indiana hasn’t left much room for error in terms of strength of schedule if it’s on the bubble.
The Big Ten schedule will be announced at a later date, although Indiana will know who will play in the expanded 18-team conference’s 20-game schedule.
The Hoosiers will play home and away Ohio State, Penn State and Purdue.
Indiana will host Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Rutgers, USC and UCLA. The Hoosiers will travel to Iowa, Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin.
