The Gophers men’s basketball team scored a big rebound in the NCAA transfer portal on Wednesday.

Canisius forward Frank Mitchell committed to Minnesota after visiting the U campus earlier this week.

In the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the 6-foot-5 junior ranked fourth in Division I last season with 11.6 rebounds per game. The second-team, all-MAAC honoree averaged a double-double a year ago with 12.1 points in 31 games.

Mitchell only began playing competitive basketball at age 18 and played the 2021-22 season at Humber College in Toronto before practicing with the team, but was left out of transfer rules during the 2022-23 season, according to his biography of Canisius.

The Gophers are in need of several players, particularly with rising junior center transfer Pharrell Payne. Minnesota now has four scholarships open this spring.

Against top competition last season, Mitchell had 12 points and nine rebounds in two different games against Syracuse and Pittsburgh.
