Jimmer Fredette and the USA men’s 3×3 basketball team are still looking for their first Olympic victory after losing to Poland 19-17 on Wednesday.

They are now 0-2 in group play and could struggle even more in the future due to an apparent injury to Fredette.

The former BYU basketball star sought medical attention midway through Wednesday’s game and was shown on the sideline getting a massage on his left leg.

Fredette was able to return to the game after receiving medical care, but he and his teammates were unable to reach Poland before time ran out.

The US team played from behind from the start. Poland started well, in part due to their size advantage. (Polish player Adrian Bogucki is 7′1″.)

Poland led by as many as 5 points early in the action before the USA team got within 2 with around six minutes remaining.

But turnovers, sloppy shooting and Fredette’s discomfort prevented Team USA from tying the score.

They got to 2 with less than a minute to go, but Serbia managed to maintain their lead and run the clock down.

Fredette finished the game with 3 points.

3×3 basketball format at the Olympics

Fredette’s U.S. team is one of eight men’s 3×3 teams participating in the 2024 Olympics.

During the group round, which is currently ongoing, each team faces all seven other teams. That means the U.S. team, which has played two games so far and has an 0-2 record, has at least five games remaining in the Olympics — two on Thursday, two on Friday and one on Saturday.

At the end of the group round, the eight 3×3 teams will be ranked according to their records and teams will begin to be eliminated.

“The top two teams advance to the semi-finals, while the bottom two are eliminated. The other four teams will compete in a play-in round (third vs sixth, fourth vs fifth), with the winners advancing to the semi-finals,” he said. ESPN.

3×3 basketball rules

In addition to having a different tournament format than 5×5 basketball, 3×3 basketball has different rules.

  • In 3×3 basketball, shots from inside the arc are worth 1 point, while shots from outside the arc are worth 2 points.

  • Free throws are also worth 1 point.

  • The game is played on a court that is about half the size of a typical basketball court and there is only one basket.

  • Games end when a team reaches 21 points or after 10 minutes.

Wednesday’s game between the USA and Poland ended after 10 minutes because neither team reached 21.
