Michigan football was somewhat immune to departures through the transfer portal before spring ball, but there was a small exodus happening toward the end of the early practice period.
The first was supposed cornerback DJ Waller’s shocking play as he entered the portal on Wednesday. Not as shocking, but certainly surprising, was the news on Thursday that early enrollee and all-state linebacker Jeremiah Beasley would be leaving the program.
Another surprising move came Thursday, when former West Bloomfield (Mich.) four-star offensive lineman Amir Herring — not expected to be a contributor this year, but certainly in the future — is expected to submit his name to the portal.
The Wolverines have plenty of depth along the offensive line and Herring has not been mentioned as a potential contributor by the team this spring. Entering his second year, the expectation was that Herring could find a role in the coming years as older players exited the program.
