Athan Kaliakmanis will be the American football starting quarterback heading into Rutgers fall camp, a source can confirm to Rutgers Wire. And incumbent starter Gavin Wimsatt is ready to enter the transfer portal.
The news that Kaliakmanis was named the Rutgers starter and Wimsatt reaching the portal were originally broken down by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Kaliakmanis arrived at Rutgers in January after transferring after a solid sophomore season at Minnesota. He looks to be the clear winner of the spring season, looking solid in the fight against Scarlet-White.
His relationship with offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca, who recruited him to Minnesota, clearly paid dividends here. Kaliakmanis had clear control of the offense during the spring game and looked comfortable in the pocket.
Coach Greg Schiano’s decision to name Kaliakmanis the starter following the conclusion of spring camp allows Wimsatt to enter the transfer portal at an opportune time.

A former four-star recruited quarterback from Kentuck, Wimsatt entered Rutgers in early September 2021 after graduating from high school. He earned the starting job in 2023 and showed progress in his development by leading Rutgers to a Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl victory over Miami.
