You probably already know that USC women’s basketball has a big game against UConn on Saturday, December 21st, later this year. It’s a showcase game for JuJu Watkins and the USC program. Still, the first round of the College Football Playoff will be played that day, and the NFL has decided to continue with multiple games on December 21st. The NFL could have played extra games on Saturday, December 28th when there are no College Football Playoff games, but the NFL just can’t help itself. We should want the NFL to find a way around big basketball games and – especially – the college football playoffs.
December 28th was always there as an option. The NFL should have accepted it. However, the NFL could have had another option, but something prevented that.
Why didn’t the NFL play on Saturday, December 14th? As you can see below in the embedded tweet, the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 prevents the NFL from playing on the second Saturday in December. There was concern that the NFL would disrupt college (and high school) football more than 60 years ago. Now, however, times have changed. With the College Football Playoff moving to the third Saturday in December in many years, it is now imperative that the NFL plays on the second Saturday in December to be able to avoid the third Saturday. This law needs to be changed.
The Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 prevents the NFL from playing on that day as it is the second Saturday in December.
