During the first weekend of official visits American football scored an impressive (yes, impressive) 10 engagements. The influx of talent has Rutgers rising dramatically in the recruiting rankings with a new landing spot on Monday.
Now, having seen the class more than double in size over the previous three days, Rutgers has the 10th-ranked recruiting class in the country, according to Rivals. They are the third-highest ranked recruiting class in the Big Ten, behind only Ohio State It is USC.
On Monday, Rutgers wrapped things up by securing Robbie Johnson Jr.’s commitment.
A three-star recruit from Delaware, Johnson received offers from Duke, Old Dominion, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Temple and West Virginia.
The rise in rankings is largely due to the fact that the Scarlet Knights now have 18 commitments in their class.
The average star rating for committed players is 3.0 (it’s easy math since all 18 players are rated three stars by Rivals.
This puts Rutgers well behind other programs that are ahead in the rankings, such as No. 10 Penn State (3.54).
But it’s still good news for Rutgers. While the class still needs to fill some key positions (offensive line, running back, tight end and defensive back), Rutgers has certainly made an impact at wide receiver and defensive line.
There is also a sense of momentum with this class coming together. Rutgers clearly had a monster recruiting weekend and is now in a position where it can be picky about filling out the rest of the class.
