After committing American football Sunday afternoon, Gerrick Gordon ended his recruitment. His speech over the weekend during an official visit to the Big Ten program represents a significant recruiting win for the program.
Rutgers fought off stiff competition to sign Gordon, who is a 6-foot-5, 270-pound interior offensive lineman. Catholic Trinity (Ocala, Florida). A three-star offensive lineman, he is the nation’s 38th ranked interior offensive lineman per Rivals.
In March, Rutgers joined an offer list for Gordon that included Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, Purdue, South Carolina, SMU, Tulane and West Virginia, among others.
Gordon’s commitment came on Sunday after a conversation with the head coach Greg Schiano. It was a meeting that impressed Gordon with Schiano’s honesty with him.
“He was pretty straightforward,” Gordon told Rutgers Wire of the meeting before his commitment.
“He told me my ups and downs. He didn’t just tell me my highs. (I) want a coach who will tell you the truth and that’s hard to find.”
Specifically, Gordon said Schiano highlighted “Things I need to work on on and off the field.”
As for his other relationships on the Rutgers staff, Gordon likes how things have progressed with the offensive line coach Pat Flaherty.
Now in his second year at Rutgers, Flaherty has overhauled Rutgers’ offensive line and helped the unit make a significant developmental leap in his first season back with the program. Flaherty brings two decades of NFL experience to Rutgers, having been part of the Scarlet Knights’ coaching staff early in his career.
“Coach Flaherty is a big reason I committed,” Gordon said.
“The man knows what it takes to be great. He knows what it’s like to win and what it takes.”
Gordon said he will not take any other official visits and is fully committed to Rutgers.
On the recruiting trip with Gordon was Lates Kinslera mentor who helped guide you through the recruiting process.
Kinsler is a former standout college football player at Cincinnati who played in the NFL. His son is Jordan Kinslera Rutgers running back who showed some flashes recently in the spring game.
