The upcoming 2024 season for the Alabama Crimson Tide football program will be interesting. The team may be entering a new era as legendary head coach Nick Saban has decided to retire and has been replaced by former Washington Huskies head coach Kalen DeBoer, but that doesn’t mean the elite status immediately disappeared.
Under Saban, Alabama was a consistent contender for the SEC title, a regular participant in the College Football Playoffs and an annual national championship contender. Some believe that DeBoer will keep the Crimson Tide on this path thanks to the solid foundation left by Saban, while others argue that the end of Alabama’s dynasty has arrived.
For now, all fans can do is predict what the next season will be like. However, a good way to guess how a team will do is to look at expert projections based on analytics to determine the program’s potential success.
Recently, Pro Football Focus (PFF) revealed a 2024 College Football Power Rankings (subscription required), which lists all 134 FBS teams from strongest to weakest based on a few important factors.
PFF used strength of schedule, projected win total, projected chance of making a bowl game, projected chance of winning their respective conference and projected chance of winning the national championship.
The Crimson Tide ranks No. 5 overall, behind No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs#2 Texas LonghornsNo. 3 Michigan wolverines and no. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes.
As for the factors used to determine Alabama’s ranking, the Tide has the 23rd toughest strength of schedule, a projected win total of 9.6, 98.18% chance of making a bowl game, 20.31% chance of winning the SEC championship and a 7.44% chance of winning a national title.
DeBoer is under immense pressure in his first season as head coach of the Crimson Tide. Being Nick Saban’s immediate successor comes with nearly unattainable expectations and the eyes of fans and pundits alike scrutinizing his every move under a microscope.
The 2024 Alabama football season begins Aug. 31 when the Tide faces Western Kentucky at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
