Things are about to get more crowded on the sidelines of college football games, in a good way. On Tuesday, the NCAA Division I Council voted to remove limits to members of the coaching staff and support staff who may be on the field during training and games.

For OSU, that means more than 25 assistants or support staff could be on the field. It’s probably unlikely the program will allow everyone, but now there’s at least the possibility that anyone connected to the team could be on the field, if that makes sense.

The rule will go into effect immediately, so look for fall practices to have more hands on deck as the Buckeyes report back to get things ready for this fall.

While these limits are being removed for games and practices, the limit of only 11 coaches travel when it comes to taking trips to recruit FBS level players.

Day recently said he would be in favor of expanding the number of coaches on the field if approved, but not for the reason you might think. It had more to do with the development opportunity for coaches.

“We thought about it. We’ve talked about this,” Day said. “I think one of the things you have to consider is all the guys who want to grow in this profession and the opportunity they can have in this profession, we want to make sure we’re not limiting those people. But at the same time, we are in the process of recruiting people to our team, not recruiting. So it’s different than the NFL, and there’s a lot of things to consider, especially with some of the IAWP (individual associated with a prospect) rules that go along with drafting a prospect.”

Consider this another change in a set of changes we’ve seen to the college football model in recent years. Are you following?
