ALEXANDER CITY — Redshirt sophomore kicker Alex McPherson, one of Auburn football’s most effective players, is dealing with a non-injury issue ahead of his third season with the team.
“It’s a weird question and I don’t really want to get into it,” coach Hugh Freeze said Tuesday at an AMBUSH event when asked about his team’s health. “But he’s fighting one. I think he’ll be fine.”
Freeze later clarified that he expects McPherson to play in 2024, but “he’s just battling a health issue. It took a while, actually, to get diagnosed. It has to do with his gut. I think they’re in the way.” to be on the right path.”
McPherson, the younger brother of Cincinnati Bengals kicker Evan McPherson, was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award in 2023, going 100% on both field goals (13 of 13) and points after touchdowns (40 of 40). He is ranked by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 1 kicker in the 2022 class.
Auburn is healthy with about a month left in preseason workouts, Freeze said. Redshirt freshman cornerback Tyler Scott is out for the entire 2024 season with an injured ACL, but he is the only player currently expected to miss time; forward Tate Johnson is undergoing minor surgery, but Freeze expects him to be ready in August.
