Few outside of Ann Arbor gave Michigan football a chance in 2023 to win the national championship, but those who did knew what the Wolverines had. And now that the national championship takes place in Ann Arbor, few are giving Michigan football a chance once again.
While this year may be a big question mark with a new head coach in Sherrone Moore, a new starting quarterback still decided and some new coaches on staff, the future looks bright for maize and blue in the eyes of On3 analyst JD PicKell .
With the rapid pace of recruiting for Sherrone Moore and her staff over the past month, PicKell has noticed some of the differences in talent the Wolverines are bringing. the mountain in the future.
“Michigan, they’ve always been a great developmental school. They’ve always been that school that takes the three stars or the low four stars and then you bring them in and they end up being very successful because they waited their turn,” PicKell said. “They bought in, they had the right strength and conditioning program and they had the right coaches.
“Guys, they are now adding, in my opinion, as Andy Staples would say, a higher degree of raw ingredients being class No. 11. What if they both do well with Sherrone Moore in terms of recruiting and development? What if they pick a top 10 class, develop it further, and get the most out of those top 10 caliber recruits?
“I don’t think Michigan is going anywhere. And from what I believe, I think Sherrone Moore is going to delve deeper into the process that he was part of with Jim Harbaugh, is going to refine it in some ways. They will prioritize recruiting. It will not be, I believe from now on, under Sherrone Moore, an “oh, we did more with less” type of operation. I’m not saying you have a top five class in America, but you probably will. It will be a school that has very good raw materials and develops them even further.”
Jim Harbaugh also brought in elite talent at the same rate as some of the other top programs in his early years with the Wolverines, but now there’s a big difference. The culture has changed in Ann Arbor, there is a lot more accountability, everyone is moving in the same direction instead of following their own goals.
If Moore can get top-10 classes while keeping everyone focused on the culture of the program, then there will be a better than average value that the Wolverines can repeat in the coming years.
