Given that we are now in the era of the 12-team college football playoffs, a natural question for the 2024 college football season is this: Which schools have a realistic chance of making the college football playoffs for the first time? These are college football’s potential party crashers, the schools that could break out and make a bigger name in a land rich with opportunity. There is a bit of projection with the USC Trojans, who are coming off Lincoln Riley’s worst season as head coach with an 8-5 record. Offense isn’t the concern, but perhaps changes on the defensive side of the ball will allow them to get back into the fight for the national championship. They will be tested in Week 1 in Las Vegas when they face the LSU Tigers, who are also replacing their Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and defensive coordinator.
