Michigan coach Sherrone Moore could face penalties in sign-stealing scandal

Michigan football was under investigation last season for a sign stealing scandal that resulted in John Harbaugh’s 3-game suspension from the Big Ten. However, it may not be over as the Wolverine program may still be in trouble.

A whistleblower notification, obtained by ESPN’s Dan Murphy and Pete Thamelindicates that new Michigan coach Sherrone Moore could face additional penalties for his involvement in the scandal.

“The draft, which may be subject to change, states that Moore could face a for-cause penalty and possibly a suspension for allegedly deleting a thread of 52 text messages with former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions in October 2023 , the same day that media reports revealed Stalions was leading an effort to capture the game signals of future opponents,” Murphy and Thamel wrote.

According to the report, Moore is looking at a Level 2 breach as the texts were eventually recovered. The program is also considering a Level 1 charge for its work to avoid an investigation into the situation. Many of the other key coaches in this investigation, such as Connor Stalions, Chris Partridge and Denard Robinson, are also no longer with the program.

Unlike the Buckeyes, who don’t have many important games early in the season, the Wolverines do, facing Texasone of the best programs in the country, on Sept. 7, the Week 2 opener. If Moore is suspended for this, it could be problematic for the Wolverines.

We’ll have to let all this play out, of course, especially once official notice of the charges drops on Ann Arbor’s doorstep.
