BOULDER, Colorado – Three-time US Olympic champion Emma Coburn says her “Paris dream is over” after breaking her ankle at the Diamond League meet in Shanghai and undergoing surgery.
Coburn, who won the bronze medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, will now miss the U.S. track events for the Paris Olympics.
“The dream of Paris is over,” Coburn, 33, wrote on her Instagram account on Thursday.
Coburn thought she merely sprained her right ankle in a jump into the water during the 3,000-meter steeplechase last Saturday, but later examinations revealed significant damage.
“When I got home, the scans showed torn ligaments, damaged cartilage, and a fractured medial malleolus,” she wrote.
During surgery, a screw was implanted into the fracture.
“If everything goes well, I can start running again in 6 weeks. This means I am out of the Olympic Trials,” wrote Coburn, who also competed in the 2012 London Olympics and the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
Coburn was also the 2017 world champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Her post included video snippets of her exercising after surgery with her ankle in a cast.
“See you there later this year,” she wrote.
