PRAGUE — Finland defeated newcomers Great Britain 8-0 for their first ice hockey world championship victory on Sunday.
Oliver Kapanen scored three goals and Mikael Granlund provided four assists as the Finns bounced back from a 1-0 penalty shootout defeat to hosts the Czech Republic in their opening game.
Finnish goalkeeper Emil Larmi made 14 saves to equalize in a Group A game in Prague.
For Great Britain it was the second defeat in a row, after the 4-2 defeat to Canada in the first game.
Slovakia also recorded their first victory, a 6-2 victory over Kazakhstan in Group B in Ostrava.
Defending champions Canada face Denmark and Switzerland face Austria in Group A on Sunday.
Sweden face another newcomer, Poland, and last year’s bronze medalists Latvia face France in Group B.
