Juventus fire coach Massimiliano Allegri for his outburst at referees in the Coppa Italia final

TURIN, Italy – Juventus fired coach Massimiliano Allegri on Friday for his ugly outburst at referees in the Coppa Italia final.

Juventus still have two Serie A games remaining but Allegri is expected to miss following a two-game ban for his behavior in Wednesday’s Cup final.

Allegri lost his cool in stoppage time when he was angered by a decision, ripped off his jacket and received a red card for sarcastically applauding the referee. Juventus beat Atalanta 1-0.

Juventus said in a statement that Allegri’s behavior was not in line with its “values”.

“The dismissal follows certain behaviors during and after the Italian Cup final that the club considered incompatible with the values ​​of Juventus and the behavior that those who represent it should display,” the statement said.

In addition to the suspension, he was also fined 5,000 euros ($5,400) by the Italian league judge. Allegri “acted aggressively” and used insulting language and gestures towards the referees, the judge reported.

Allegri would also have been aggressive with journalists after the match.

Away from the Italian Cup, Juventus has had a disappointing season. They fell to fourth place in Serie A and were banned from European competitions due to a case of false accounting.

Allegri was in his second spell at Juventus, having returned to the club in July 2021. He was more successful in his first season with the Bianconeri, winning five consecutive Serie A titles from 2015-19. His only trophy since returning was the Coppa Italia won this week, which became his last match for the team.

Juventus did not immediately announce a replacement for Allegri. There is speculation that the club wants to sign Thiago Motta, from Bologna, for next season, which may have caused a disagreement between Allegri and the club.
