PINEHURST, North Carolina – Rory McIlroy and his wife Erica have given up on divorce plans and are rebuilding their marriage. They filed to voluntarily dismiss the case on Tuesday.
It was another dramatic turnaround for McIlroy. The news broke when he arrived at the last big event in May, where they had filed for divorce. And two days before the U.S. Open, news came that the divorce proceedings had been settled in a lawsuit in Palm Beach County, Florida.
Speaking to The Guardian in the UK, McIlroy said: “Recently there have been rumors about my personal life, which is unfortunate. Responding to every rumor is a fool’s game.
“Over the past few weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future would be as a united family. Fortunately, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”
They have a daughter, Poppy, who will turn 4 in September.
McIlroy released a statement at the PGA Championship confirming the divorce and his desire to keep difficult times respectful and amicable. He made no mention of it during his press conference on Tuesday.
