WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The United States has hired another diver for the Paris Olympics.

Daryn Wright of Plainfield, Indiana, was added to the team after World Aquatics awarded the Americans a second spot in the women’s 10-meter platform.

Wright finished second in that event at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Knoxville, Tenn., last weekend, but an Olympic berth was not guaranteed.

“It was a long four days, but luckily the good news came,” Wright, 20, said Thursday after learning she was heading to her first Summer Olympics. right now, to say the least, I am very, very excited and thrilled, but very shocked.”

Countries earned guaranteed places with top-12 finishes at the 2023 and 2024 world championships. Delaney Schnell, who finished sixth at the 2023 World Championships, topped the 10-meter classification in the trials to end her trip to Paris.

A maximum of 136 divers can compete in the eight Olympic events – four individual and four synchronized. To fill the quota, additional places may be reallocated to the next highest placing federations at the 2024 world championships that have not yet qualified.

Wright was surprised by friends and family, who broke the news at the pool at Purdue University, where she trains. This made up for her not having had experience being part of the team at tryouts.

“It was difficult because I didn’t necessarily know the odds, whether they were good or not, just because it took so long to see if we had second place,” she said. direction, but I’m glad today was good.”
