STUTTGART, Germany – Substitute Mikel Merino took Spain to the European Championship semi-finals as they claimed a 2-1 extra-time victory over Germany on Friday.

Florian Wirtz’s equalizer in the last minute of regular time sent the intense quarter-finals into extra time.

Dani Olmo – who set up Merino’s winning goal – scored the first goal early in the second half.

Spanish defender Dani Carvajal was sent off at the end of extra time for a second yellow card and will be suspended for Tuesday’s semi-final against Portugal or France. Fellow defender Robin le Normand will also miss the match after receiving a yellow card.

The result ended the career of German Toni Kroos.
