ARLINGTON, Texas – Country artist Cody Johnson sang the national anthem without a hitch before the All-Star Game in his home state of Texas, the night after a widely criticized performance by Ingris Andress this led to an apology and an admission that she was drunk.
Johnson walked toward the microphone between the mound and home plate at the home of the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night, wearing a white cowboy hat and a cream blazer. The 37-year-old Texan took off his hat just before he started singing and raised it several times with his right hand along the way.
Johnson had already thrown a ceremonial first pitch at Globe Life Field earlier this season before setting the task for the anthem.
It ended up coming under more scrutiny following the drama surrounding Andress, who said in her Instagram apology that she planned to enter rehab. Andress sang the anthem before the Home Run Derby on Monday night.
Johnson will perform at the Rangers’ home ground in November.
Nice Horse, Canadian duo Katie Rox and Brandi Sidoryk, sang that country’s anthem before Johnson’s performance. The harmony-filled version also went well.
