College football fans are outraged that Jim Harbaugh was named honorary captain for the Michigan Wolverines’ season opener.

The former Michigan coach will return to Ann Arbor for the Wolverines’ game against Fresno State on Aug. 31.

“I’m looking forward to seeing him,” said Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel told the 1 Star Recruits podcast.

“He will be honorary captain in our first game.

“I look forward to having him back in Ann Arbor for that game.”

The move comes just days after Harbaugh received a four-year exhibition order from the NCAA for impermissible contact with recruits and players during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now with the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL, Harbaugh has effectively been banned from coaching college football again until 2028.

Many college football fans had a lot of fun with Harbaugh’s quick return to Michigan.

“Amazing! Jim Harbaugh is just trolling the NCAA right now,” said one fan.

“Michigan Football has perfected NCAA trolling,” said another fan.

“Harbaugh is just trolling,” another fan commented.

Harbaugh had a muted response to the sanctions earlier this week.

“I am discontinuing comment engagement,” he said.

“My only hope is that one day college athletics will be about what is best for the young men and women who participate.

“That’s all I have to say about that.”

The NCAA ruled that Harbaugh “engaged in unethical conduct, failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance, and violated the head coach’s accountability obligations.”

Harbaugh previously denied having any knowledge of the scouting operation that led to the NCAA investigation.

“Never lie. Never cheat. Never steal. I was raised with that lesson,” he said.

College Football Changing in 2024

The move of Oklahoma and Texas from the Big 12 to the SEC is one of the biggest changes in college football in recent memory.

And that set off a chain reaction that left the Pac-12 conference decimated.

The Pac-12 has lost 10 of its 12 members and is down to just Oregon and Washington states.

Four of those teams are headed to the Big 12 – Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah.

Four others go to the Big 10 – Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington.

And the other two teams, California and Stanford, will participate in the ACC conference.

No team has left the SEC, Big Ten or ACC.

“I raised my family based on that lesson. I preached that lesson to the teams I coached. No one is perfect.

“If you stumble, apologize and correct the situation.

“Today I don’t apologize. I didn’t participate. I was not aware of or complicit in these allegations.

“So for me, it’s getting back to work and attacking with an enthusiasm unknown to humanity.”

Michigan also faces punishment for a sign-stealing scandal.
