The New England Patriots have been warned not to play a dangerous game in this week’s NFL Draft.

The Patriots have the third pick in the draft, with many expecting them to select Michigan quarterback Drake Maye.

But GMFB analyst Peter Schrager has been stirring the pot ahead of the big event in Detroit.

Schrager appeared on the Pat McAfee Show this week to talk about the plan for the Patriots.

“I think Maye goes third,” Schrager said.

“I think there are some teams that will be trying hard, trying to move up.

“The two teams I hear most about as Maye teams are the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants.

“If the Patriots don’t believe in Maye, maybe you go back to 11 (where the Vikings are) and hope JJ McCarthy is sitting there.

“This is a dangerous game.”

Schrager also commented on speculation that Tom Brady would have a word with quarterback McCarthy.

The 21-year-old plays for the University of Michigan, just as the iconic Brady did during his college football years in the 1990s.

“Mr. Brady calls and says, hey guys, this kid from Michigan, he’s got what it takes,” Schrager said.

“I don’t think Brady is calling anyone or saying anything, but that’s what happens 48 hours before the Draft.

“I don’t see it, I think it’s Drake Maye at three or someone else negotiates to get him

“Wow, if they start getting cute with this thing, this is going to get really interesting.

“To me, you need a quarterback, take Drake Maye, he’s 21, build around him.”

Maye was very impressive in his three seasons at Michigan. He finished with 8,018 yards and 63 touchdown passes.

The Patriots could very well decide to include him in their rebuilding plans.

New England finished the 2023 season with a 4-13 record, its worst since 1992.

Legendary coach Bill Belichick, who led them to six Super Bowl triumphs, stepped down at the end of the season.

Jerod Mayo, who has been coach of the Inside Linebackers since 2019, was named Belichick’s replacement.

The 2024 NFL Draft begins in Detroit on Thursday night.
