DETROIT Lions superstar Jared Goff is sure to cash in over the next few years with his new contract extension worth a whopping $212 million.
Goff led the Lions to their first playoff victories in more than three decades last season.
Now the franchise wants to build on that success, aiming to ensure the 29-year-old quarterback stays with them for the long haul.
Goff’s new deal, disclosed Monday by Adam Schefter, will make him the NFL’s second-highest-paid quarterback per year.
His deal will average $53 million per season, trailing only Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow at $55 million.
That puts him ahead of Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert ($52.5 million), Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson ($52 million) and Philadelphia Eagles center Jalen Hurts ($51 million). .
Goff becomes the highest-paid player in Lions history with this new deal, which will reportedly include $170 million guaranteed.
It’s yet another sign of the clear intent in Detroit to ensure that the brilliant recent progress under coach Dan Campbell doesn’t go to waste.
The Lions have already rewarded three of their star players this offseason, with more than $444 million in contract extensions for Goff, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and offensive lineman Penei Sewell.
The 2023 season has been stellar for Goff. He threw for 4,575 yards with 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Speaking last month, Goff explained how ambitious he was to build on such a good Lions season.
“We have a lot of work to do,” he said.
“Expectations are high, but internally our standards are rising, and our expectations are rising, and we have goals and things we want to do.
“We’re not going to show up and start winning again.
“Just focus on what matters and try to improve and help our team win games, advance further than last year and hopefully be the last team standing at the end. That’s all I’m thinking about.”
The Lions will reveal their 2024 season schedule on Wednesday night.
