The 26-year-old’s arrival on a one-year contract was announced by the team on Thursday.

Perine will enter training camp looking to fight for reps with Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren, Cordarrelle Patterson, Jonathan Ward, Aaron Shampklin and Daijun Edwards.

Perin’s arrival was widely received with enthusiasm from fans of X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Solid. I can’t complain,” commented one of them.

“Wow, so we’re really into this Super Bowl race, right?” replied a second.

“Good decision, but the contract is too short,” suggested another.

While a fourth joked: “The entire Steelers team is made up of RBs and 4 WRs.”

Perine was a star at Florida from 2016 to 2019, rushing for 2,485 yards and 22 touchdowns in 50 games for the Gators.

He also had another 674 yards and eight aerial touchdowns.

During the 2019 Orange Bowl, he rushed for a career-high 138 yards in beating Virginia 36-28.

Perin was subsequently chosen in the fourth round of the draft by the New York Jets in 2020.

As a rookie, he came off the bench 10 times to rush for 232 yards and two touchdowns, playing a career-high 224 snaps on offense and special teams.

After making just four starts during his second season, Perine was cut and claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Eagles.

His passage in Pennsylvania lasted less than a week before he was released and signed by the Miami Dolphins.

After spending most of the season on Miami’s practice squad, Perine was cut and quickly signed by the Chiefs during their Super Bowl run.

After winning his first ring in February, he spent the following season bouncing between the active roster and the practice squad, earning another ring in the process.

Including the playoffs, Perine made six appearances for Kansas City, rushing for 77 yards.

However, he didn’t set himself up for any Super Bowl wins.

Perine’s release comes after the Chiefs added undrafted rookies Emani Bailey and Carson Steele, free agent Hassan Hall and former Welsh rugby international Louis Rees-Zammit this offseason.
