NFL Insider Mike Garafolo reported Monday that the 49ers were working to finalize a deal with Thomas, 32.

The veteran tight end has been without a team since the Commanders waived him in early March, freeing up about $6.5 million in salary cap space.

He recorded 496 yards on 55 receptions while scoring four touchdowns during the 2023 NFL season.

In four seasons with Washington, Thomas accumulated 1,685 receiving yards and 14 TDs.

The former Virginia Tech standout is expected to return to the NFC West, where he began his NFL career as a quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals.

He then recorded short stints with the Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, Detroit Lions and Buffalo Bills before signing with the Commanders in 2020.

Thomas has earned over $27 million in career earnings so far.

His imminent arrival comes hot on the heels of the 49ers supposedly signed running back and reigning Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey to a two-year extension worth $19 million.

San Francisco also recently extended wide receiver Juan Jennings’ contract for two more years.

Jennings’ deal is said to be worth up to $15.4 million, including $10.5 million in guaranteed money.

‘It’s a little alarming,’ says Colin Cowherd as Fox Sports analyst concerned about ‘too thin’ Tua Tagovailoa

The 49ers have not yet reached an agreement with star Brandon Aiyuk.

The former first-round pick’s rookie contract expires after the 2024 campaign.

And it is believed that the two sides are still far apart in negotiations on a new agreement.

Last month, rumors claimed that Aiyuk requested a trade.

But his agent, Ryan Williams of Athletes First, quickly denied that was the case.

Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson’s historic four-year, $140 million extension could further complicate negotiations.

Jefferson’s deal, which includes $110 million guaranteed, is expected to encourage other NFL players to ask for more money in contract negotiations.

As of now, Aiyuk will pocket $14.1 million in 2024.

The former Arizona State standout finished the previous campaign with 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

He totaled 149 yards and a score in the postseason, which ended with a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.
