KANSAS City Chiefs defensive end BJ Thompson is recovering after suffering a seizure and cardiac arrest in practice.
After being taken off the field in an ambulance, Thompson is awake and responsive, according to his agent.
Thompson is a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Stephen F. Austin University.
NFL reporter Tom Pelissero initially reported on the medical emergency.
“The Chiefs canceled all team activities today after a reserve offensive lineman had a seizure at a special teams meeting and went into cardiac arrest, according to sources,” he wrote.
“The team’s medical team worked quickly, an ambulance was called and the player is in a stable condition.”
Chiefs reporter Pete Sweeney credited the doctors and trainers on scene for their quick response in treating Thompson.
“Doctors and trainers responded quickly and he (the player) is currently in stable condition at a local hospital,” he wrote.
Pelissero followed up on his initial report on Thompson’s cardiac arrest, saying the 25-year-old’s “prognosis is good.”
The Chiefs held a charity softball game after the frightening event, where defensive coordinator Steve Spagnulo spoke about the emergency.

“Let me say something before I say anything, I’m thinking about BJ right now,” Spagnuolo told the local Fox affiliate. WDAF.
“It was scary. I think the guys were a little scared, I know I was.
“But a lot of prayer and [VP of sports medicine and performance] Rick [Burkholder] and your team did an excellent job.”
NFL fans breathed a sigh of relief at the new report and shared their best wishes for Thompson’s recovery.
“I wish him a great recovery. Heart problems are no fun,” said one fan.
“What good news! Wishing you a speedy recovery!” another fan said.
“Thank God,” said a third fan.
“Good news!!!! Sending my love and thoughts to this young man!” a fourth fan said.
The Chiefs returned to organized team activities last month after winning their second consecutive Super Bowl.
These OTAs ended after the third segment of training ended on Friday.
The mandatory minicamp opens on June 11th and will last three days.
The Chiefs will return to training camp the last week of July.
