A potential key to the turnaround this upcoming season could be new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen.

The former Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints coach enters 2024 as a rookie coordinator.

But although Adams and Hamilton were excited about their potential with a talented defensive line, they couldn’t help but get distracted during the debate.

“He looks like a villain” Adams joked.

“I feel like (NFL Network’s) Adam Rank could have dressed up really well as him for Halloween.”

It appears Rank agreed, commenting with a series of laughing emojis on Adams’ tweet.

And after a viewer commented, “Definitely looks like Rank,” the NFL Network reporter came back to specify, “I mean, with hair, obviously.”

Hamilton later joked that Nielsen was Rank’s “Wario”, to which he responded: “Hahaha. I see. My long-lost brother.”

As for Nielsen’s prospects, Hamilton was optimistic about what he could accomplish with Jacksonville.

He dubbed the 45-year-old a “mustachioed wizard,” adding: “Cam Jordan (Pro Bowl defensive end), who he coached, called him a ‘top-notch coach’ when it comes to developing pass rushers.

“And he really proved that at every stop.

“At NC State, he assembled four NFL defensive linemen from a single recruiting class, headlined by Bradley Chubb, who was only a three-star player. [recruit] entering.

“With the Saints, he helped develop a third pick you know named Trey Hendrickson and became an All-Pro.

“And Cam had four double-digit sack seasons in a five-year span.

“He only had two of those in his first six seasons before Nielsen hired him in New Orleans.”

Hamilton was so excited about the addition of Nielsen that he believed 2024 could mark the return of the “Sacksonville” defense.

This was in reference to the Jaguars’ dominant defense in 2017 that led them to the AFC Championship Game.

“The talent is limitless with this group at the front,” Hamilton said.

Jacksonville’s defensive line appears to be comprised of Josh Allen, Roy Robertson-Harris, Travon Walker and newly signed Arik Armstead.

Signed to a three-year, $43.5 million contract in free agency, Armstead became one of the NFL’s premier defensive backs during his nine seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.

Jacksonville hopes that with its defensive additions it can turn the page on its struggles last season.

In 2023, they finished 17th in the NFL in total yards allowed (5,828) and 16th in points allowed (371).
